Burt Castle

Burt Castle is situated on Castlehill and is one of the most recognizable and iconic castles in Donegal. It is located on a small hill and can be seen for miles around from wherever you are. It was originally built around 1560 by the O’Doherty’s. It is very close to the villages of Burt and Newtowncunningham.

It is one of several castles associated with the O’Doherty clan of Inishowen.

Originally the castle would have been on an island surrounded by marshland. The structure has three stories, two circular watchtowers, a small vaulted chamber and openings for muskets.

Unfortunately, the castle lies on private land and it is not currently possible to get up close to it unless you have the opportunity to ask the landowner for permission.
