Carndonagh mass rock
On the Carndonagh to Ballyliffin road a short distance from the St Patrick’s Cross there is a sign pointing up a small lane on the left-hand side for the Carndonagh mass rock. Climb up the lane for approximately 200 m and you will see a sign pointing to a path on the left for the mass rock.
Go along this path in amongst some trees and you will find a clearing and on the far side of the clearing, you will see the mass rock.
During Penal Time’s the celebration of Catholic Mass was banned so priests and worshippers had to find hidden areas in the countryside to celebrate Mass. The mass rock here was used as an altar in the mid-17th century and the times of Mass were never scheduled. Word of mouth was used to communicate when the mass was to happen.
