Inishowen Head Walk
Inishowen Head Walk is a great long 8 km looped walk that takes you from the car park at Shrove Beach up and along the cliffs, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. It is also possible to cycle the route on mountain bikes with care.
It then returns back to the beach following an old bog road over the hills, with the last bit on the main road, though it is very quiet with little traffic.
The route is on old bog roads and paths and is on good terrain. At the start, it has a very steep climb to the top of the cliffs and so a good level of fitness is required if you are going all the way around.
There is a car park a little bit up the walk at the old WW2 lookout posts for those people who would like to only do a part of the walk.
There are a lot of viewpoints along the route which are marked on the map, which can be found in the images below. You will also find several information points along the way.
One of the viewpoints is at PortKill. At the bottom of the cliffs at this point is a tiny beach and it is the location of a religious site dedicated to Colmcille. The site contains a holy well and a cross inscribed pillar stone, dating from the 8th century.
