Profile
Northburgh Castle
Northburgh Castle is known locally as ‘Greencastle’ and was one of the most impressive Norman castles built in Ireland.
It was built in the 14th century (1305) by the Red Earl of Ulster, Richard de Burgo. He used the castle to establish a base for Norman power in the North West of Ireland and to guard the entrance to Lough Foyle.
Close by are the ruins of a Medieval Church called Temple Moyle. Local tradition has it that a tunnel stretches from the castle to the church.
You can read more about the castle and of Greencastle from the Inishowen Maritime Museum website.
