Profile
Northburg Castle
Northburg Castle is known locally as ‘Greencastle’ and was one of the most impressive Norman castles built in Ireland.
It was built in the 14th-century (1305) by the Red Earl of Ulster, Richard de Burgo. He used the castle to establish a base for Norman power in the North West of Ireland and to guard the entrance to Lough Foyle.
Close by are the ruins of a Medieval Church called Temple Moyle. Local tradition has it that a tunnel stretches from the castle to the church.
You can read more about the castle and of Greencastle from the Inishowen Maritime Museum website.
