The Famine Pot
The Famine Pot is a historical artefact that was restored and placed at the spot known locally as “Brachen Brae” in 1998. The contents of the pot called Brachán ( a vegetable or grain porridge ) were distributed to the local starving population during the Great Famine of 1845 – 1851.
The Pot was donated to the local community by The Society of Friends (The Quakers) and the food was donated by subscriptions from around the world including The Sultan of Turkey, The Donegal Association of Philadelphia and the Choctaw Indian Nation of North America.
It is located on the shores of Lough Eske, a beautiful Lough in the foothills of the Bluestack Mountains and just a few km north of Donegal Town.
At the site, there is also a lovely picnic spot with views over Lough Eske and a 1.2 km woodland trail. Take a leisurely stroll through this woodland walk with a refreshing diversity of tree species including Ash, Birch, Alder, Holly, Hazel and Sitka Spruce.
The Famine Pot at Lough Eske serves as a poignant reminder of the hardship and suffering endured by the people of Ireland during the Great Famine, and of the importance of international aid and solidarity in times of crisis.
