Sligo County Museum
The Sligo County Museum stands as a proud guardian of Sligo’s rich heritage and history, offering visitors an immersive journey through time.
Within the museum, the Yeats Room is a literary treasure trove, housing manuscripts, photographs, letters, and newspaper clippings related to the esteemed local poet, William Butler Yeats. Among the remarkable items on display are a replica of his Nobel Prize medal from 1923 and a comprehensive collection of his poems spanning the years 1889 to 1936.
Additionally, the museum showcases a captivating exhibition of artefacts and memorabilia linked to Countess Constance Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth, and a large firkin containing 100-year-old bog butter, providing a fascinating glimpse into the region’s stone-age history.
Art enthusiasts will appreciate the museum’s diverse painting collection, featuring works by renowned Irish artists such as George Russell, Sean Keating, and Jack B. Yeats, the esteemed brother of poet William Butler Yeats.
