Killaghtee Cross
The Killaghtee Cross, located in County Donegal, Ireland, is a remarkable and enduring symbol of both ancient faith and artistic craftsmanship. This intricately carved stone cross stands as a testament to the rich history, spirituality, and artistic talent of its time.
The Killaghtee Cross can be traced back to approximately 650 AD. This cross is traditionally associated with the burial site of an early monk named St. Aedh, who is thought to have had a small prayer hut, known as a ‘cell,’ in the vicinity. While the carving of a Maltese Cross on the cross’s head remains distinct and visible, the intricate carving of a triple knot situated below the cross has regrettably faded over time, making it challenging to discern today.
The remains of the ancient Killaghtee church are believed to have originated in the mid-12th century and remained in active use until the early 18th century. Among the church’s surviving features is a beautifully carved window dating back to approximately the 13th century. During the mid-17th century, it transformed and was repurposed as a Protestant Church, although the old graveyard adjacent to it serves as the resting place for individuals from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds.
