St Patrick’s Cross
It is thought that the St Patrick’s Cross, also known as the Donagh Cross, dates from the seventh century and was a transition from crosses carved on slabs, such as St Mura’s cross in Fahan, to a slab that is cut out in the shape of a cross.
Carndonagh was one of the main centres of the early christen church in Donegal and a monetary was founded here around the spot of the high cross, by St Patrick.
The cross was re-erected and currently lies outside the remains of an 18th-century church with a re-used 15th-century doorway at the junction into Carndonagh from Buncrana.
